Machines vs. Free Weights? Which Is Better For Women Over 50?
One of the most common questions I see from women over 50 in our Women Who Lift Weights community is:
“Should I be using machines… or should I be lifting free weights?”
My answer?
Neither is “better.” They simply have different jobs.
Machines are a great place to start. They’re excellent for building confidence, learning movements, and training around injuries or limitations.
But if your goal is to build strength that carries over into everyday life, improve balance, mobility, and stability, free weights should become the foundation of your training.
When you train with dumbbells and kettlebells, you’re not just training muscles…
You’re training your body to move better.
That doesn’t mean machines don’t have a place. They can be a fantastic addition to your workouts.
My recommendation for most women over 50?
Build your workouts around full-body free-weight movements.
Use machines to complement your training when they make sense.
It’s not about choosing one over the other.
It’s about using the right tool at the right time.
