If Your Goal Is Fat Loss Stop Doing These 3 Things. Do This Instead.
Fat loss isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the right things.
If you’re strength training consistently but not seeing the results you want, it might not be because you’re not working hard enough. It could simply be that you’re focusing on the wrong things.
I see the same three mistakes over and over with women who are putting in real effort but still spinning their wheels. The good news? None of them are complicated to fix — once you know what to look for.
Strength training isn’t just about lifting heavier weights. It’s about building a stronger, healthier, more capable body.
Here are three common training mistakes I see all the time — and exactly what to do instead.
Spending Most Of Your Workout On Cardio
This is the one I see most often. Fat loss goal, and the plan is an hour on the treadmill or elliptical, day after day.
Cardio isn’t the enemy — but it shouldn’t be the main event. Spending most of your session on steady-state cardio burns calories while you’re doing it and basically nothing after. Strength training does something cardio alone never will: it builds the muscle that keeps burning calories long after you’ve left the gym.
Spending an hour on cardio machines.
Build your workouts around strength training, then finish with:
- Kettlebell Swings
- Farmer Carries
- Sled Pushes
- Short Conditioning Finishers
Train Harder, Not Just Longer.
Body Part Split Training
Chest day. Arm day. Shoulder day. Leg day. This split works great if you’re a bodybuilder with hours to train and recover — it works a lot less great if fat loss is the goal and you’re training a few times a week.
Isolating one muscle group at a time simply doesn’t recruit enough muscle to move the needle. If your goal is burning more calories and building real strength, you need movements that train your whole body working together — not one small muscle at a time.
Body Part Split Training
- Chest Day
- Arm Day
- Shoulder Day
- Leg Day
Train your body as one system. Prioritize:
- Squat
- Hinge
- Push
- Pull
- Carry
These movements recruit more muscle, burn more calories, and build real-world strength — the kind that carries over into everyday life, not just your workout.

Training To “Tone”
“Tone” isn’t a real training goal — it’s a feeling, and feelings don’t build muscle. Light dumbbells, endless reps, minimal effort — it feels like you’re doing something, but it’s not enough stimulus to actually change your body.
The lean, athletic look so many women are chasing doesn’t come from “toning.” It comes from building muscle, increasing strength, and training consistently with weights that actually challenge you — not endlessly chasing the feeling of a workout.
- Light Weights
- High Reps
- Minimal Effort
- Training Just To Tone
- Lift Challenging Weights
- Build Muscle
- Progress Over Time
- Get Stronger Every Week
Strength training isn’t just about lifting heavier weights. It’s about building a stronger, healthier, more capable body — and that’s what actually creates the look you’re after.
Strength Changes Everything.
Fat Loss Isn’t About…
- More Cardio
- Isolating Muscle Groups
- Training To Tone
- Getting Stronger
- Building Muscle
- Training Your Body As One System
That’s the whole formula. Not a complicated program, not a new trend — just the three mistakes to stop making, and the three principles to build your training around instead.
