Dumbbell Push Press
How To: Dumbbell Push Press
Build Explosive Power From Your Legs Up
The push press is one of the most underrated exercises in strength training. It takes the strict overhead press and adds a small, explosive leg drive to help launch the weight overhead — letting you move more weight than a strict press while training real power, not just shoulder strength.
It’s a full-body movement. Your legs and hips generate the initial drive, your core stays braced to transfer that force upward, and your shoulders and triceps finish the lift by locking the dumbbells out overhead.
How To Do It
- 1
Set up. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, feet hip-width apart, core braced.
- 2
Dip. Bend your knees slightly, staying tall through your torso. Keep the dip short and controlled.
- 3
Drive. Explosively extend your hips and knees, using that leg drive to help launch the dumbbells upward.
- 4
Press & lock out. Finish by pressing the dumbbells to full lockout overhead, arms straight, core still braced.
The most common mistake is turning the dip into a squat. It should be small and quick — just enough to load your legs, not a full knee bend. If you’re dipping too deep, you’re likely losing the explosive transfer that makes this exercise work.
💡 Coach’s Tip
Drive straight up, not forward. The power should come from your legs snapping into extension, not your torso leaning back to help throw the weight up.
